Women over 50 know how important it is for us to get regular exercise. But we don’t have to spend hours in the gym or give our entire lives over to fitness to maintain our health! Certainly, many women over 50 turn to physical fitness and exercise like weight training as hobbies as they get ready to retire. But for those of us who love to be fit but don’t feel the need to turn ourselves into, say, Martina Navratilova, there are plenty of things we can do to achieve our goals without burning ourselves out getting there.
That said, here are 3 fitness tips that I find really help my over-50 body feel and work its best:
1. Stretching. I can’t emphasize the importance of regular stretching enough! Once we’re over 50, we can lose elasticity in our muscles very easily if we continue sitting in desk chairs all day. So get up, move around a bit to warm your muscles, and then give them a good stretch at least once an hour if you’re at a desk job or several times a day if you’re at home. You can find plenty of easy stretching exercises to do online.
2. Walking. Here’s the great thing about walking: You don’t have to do it all at once. Park further away from the grocery store or the mall, take a quick walk break after lunch or dinner, and get up every hour and walk around the office to warm up before you stretch. The more that women over 50 move now, the more we’ll be able to move later.
3. You don’t need to work out like a bodybuilder, but women over 50 do need to do weight-bearing exercises to keep our bones healthy. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make this happen. Just purchase yourself some 3, 5, and maybe 10 pound hand weights and look for free weight training exercise videos online.
Remember, though, that it’s very important for everyone, not just women over 50, to consult with their healthcare practitioners before starting any kind of exercise program. Besides, your healthcare practitioner may have more ideas for fun ways to keep yourself fit!
