The world looks different today when it comes to retirement for women. For one thing, we’re probably going to live longer than our mothers did—our life expectancy is about 95 years, and that figure doesn’t take into account all of the exiting research into aging and longevity that’s going on right now.
And for another, today’s women have a lot more freedom to do what we want than our grandmothers or even our mothers enjoyed. Women today can literally retire into an exciting second life filled with achievement, excitement . . . even romance.
So what do you want to do now that any kids you had are grown and you’re (possibly) closing out your first, second, or third career? What do you want your retirement to look like?
Because today, your retirement is about you. If you’ve raised healthy, contributing adults—congratulations!— and thank you! If you’ve spent your working life at a fulfilling career, or even just at a series of jobs that supported you—congratulations!
Retirement is the time to pat yourself on the back for your past achievements. But you don’t have to sit back and retire from life as well as from your job. Far from it!
But before you just jump in and start filling your retirement time, take a moment and really consider what you want your retirement to look like. It can be easy to start stuffing commitments into the spaces left by grown children and by our job just to have something to do. Women especially seem to be wired for keeping busy and getting things done.
Before you succumb to that temptation, it’s time to make a list of your old dreams. Which dreams call to you today? Do you still want to write that novel or learn that second (or more) language? Do you have career-related goals that you put aside to have the career or careers you pursued before retirement?
Or is it time to finally start on a new career now that you don’t feel tied to the job you used to support yourself before you retired?
Retirement for women today can be anything we want it to be. Don’t settle for less than your dreams!
