Women over 50 today have some tough choices to make. If we have children, they’re either out of the house by now or about to be. We’ve worked either in or outside of our homes—some of us have pursued careers, while others held necessary, but not necessarily compelling, jobs to support our families.
But now that you’re over 50, it’s time to take stock of your life and decide what you want to do with the rest of it. Thanks to medical science and better nutrition, the chances are good that you’ve got at least another 35 to 45 years to live.
So here is what I suggest you do. Find yourself a quiet space, turn off the phone, and tell your spouse and/or kids that you’re taking some time to yourself.
Then start making a list of everything you dreamed of doing when you were young. Yes, I mean everything, no matter how crazy it sounds now. After you’ve made your list, sleep on it for a night.
When you come back the next day, look your list over again. Which of your old dreams still excite you now that you’re over 50? After all, you may not still dream of joining the band Heart, but you might see that you still want to pursue your musical talents and maybe make a second career from them.
You could see that you’ve actually always wanted to start your own business. Or maybe your dream is to volunteer with disadvantaged teenagers.
Really, it doesn’t matter what you dream as long as you dream. And it doesn’t matter what you dream if you don’t make something happen with that dream!
We may have a lot of years left when we’re over 50, but those are still going to be the last years of our lives. Today, right now, we are at the very beginning of our second lives—the last life we get. It’s up to you and no one else to make your life after 50 the life you want it to be!
Women over 50 know that we can’t make excuses. We’ve shaped our lives to where they are today—and we can shape our second lives, too. So don’t let your life just happen to you—take it by the reins!
