Remember when a lot of us Baby Boomers were telling people not to trust anyone over 30?
Well, guess what—we’re over 30 now! Most of us are a lot over 30, in fact.
It’s a good thing that 50 is the new 30, isn’t it? Because at least we know now that we can trust ourselves!
All kidding aside, I want to talk a little bit about Boomer life expectancy. Remember when our parents lived maybe 20 years after their retirements and our grandparents lived about 10 or so years after getting their gold watches?
Well, the fact is that Boomers who are in their 50s today may have as much as 50 more years to live. We can pretty much expect 40 or 45.
So what are we Boomers going to do with those extra years? We’re going to do what we’ve done all of our lives—we’re going to blast stereotypes about aging.
Think about it. We’ve already changed the way people look at youth, we’ve opened up the workforce and political life to women and minorities, and we’ve changed social mores so that women today can decide when and if to marry and when and if to have children.
So how are Boomers blasting aging stereotypes as well? Look around you! We’ve got Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. There are two women senators in California. Sharon Stone, Christie Brinkley, and Meryl Streep are still as hot and as successful as ever.
We would have believed we’d come this far by now, but our elders wouldn’t believe it. But then, they always thought we were a little . . . off, didn’t they?
So. You’ve got another 40 to 45 years to live, Boomer. You’re starting on your second life. And you’re starting that second life with all of the experience and wisdom you’ve earned in your first life.
Now assume you’re 30, knowing everything you know now. What do you want to do next? Some Boomers will go the traditional retirement route, I know, and that’s great too. But as a generation, I’m seriously looking forward to seeing what we Baby Boomers get into next!
